History, Governance, Culture and Manifestations

Running more and through tracing tracks on the timeline and weigh status of your born place, your raising plot and early meeting zone takes an edge of advantage in knowing and understanding more of the changes undergone on any form of aspects a town had of. As for me, coping to a changeable and its inconsistencies as a whole wasn't that much easy, it requires first an understanding about its various aspects--- history, government form, cultural and manifestations and some other forms which makes it up together to call as civilized municipality.

  • History

San Fernando was said to be named after the Rev. Father Fernando Sanchez, a well liked priest during the Spanish Era, for saving the people in the town against the colonizers.

The desire for self-rule, and behalf of their capabilities spurred the inhabitants of Magsico, Panadtaran, and Pitalo barrios to seek separation from their mother town of Naga into an independent municipality. Naga objected, giving the reason that the barrios cannot afford to maintain financially a municipality. But their self-confidence and persistence paid off when the barrio officials led by Don Juan Deong prevailed upon civil and religious authorities to grant them autonomy. They brought with them samples of their soil and agricultural products to Cebu City. On 1858, the four barrios were merged into a town by virtue of a Royal Decree. It was named San Isidro Labrador. But the name was later changed to San Fernando, after a popular and much-loved priest, Fr. Fernando Sanchez.

The commonly known festival in the municipality is Sikoy-Sikoy Festival which happens on every 15th of May. Sikoy Sikoy festival is a festivity to celebrate God’s gift of love to the people of San Fernando.

Sikoy Sikoy comes from the word “sikoy” which literally means “an act of fishing using nets deliberately done when tides are rough and sturdy”.
